Precious metals investors and collectors alike have been looking forward to a new silver bullion coin series expected to be released by the United States Mint before the end of the year. The series will feature designs showcasing the beauty of National Parks combined with the appeal of five ounces of .999 fine silver.

The new bullion investment product was authorized under Public Law 110-456, which also authorized the America the Beautiful Quarters Program. This series of circulating commemorative quarter dollars will be issued from 2010 to 2021 and feature designs representing National Parks, National Forests, and other federally protected areas. One area has been selected from each state, territory, and the District of Columbia.

The law further provides for the issuance of an accompanying silver bullion investment product. The designs will be a duplicate of the corresponding quarter dollar, but presented on a larger 3 inch diameter. The composition of the silver bullion coins will be .999 fine silver, which is indicated on incused edge lettering. Production levels have been established at 500,000 coins for the first year of issue.

Collectors and silver investors are yet to learn the release dates for the America the Beautiful silver bullion coins. The law provides that each silver coin can only be issued during the year of release of the quarter bearing the same design. This provides an increasingly small window of time for the United States Mint to issue the first five releases of the series featuring Hot Springs, Yellowstone, Yosemite, Grand Canyon, and Mount Hood.

The bullion coins will be distributed through the Mint\’s network of authorized bullion purchasers, who already distribute the existing bullion series. The coins are purchased based on the market price of silver plus a mark up. It is possible in future years that collectible proof and uncirculated versions of the coins may be issued. This will certainly be an added bonus for the coin collecting community.
